Come try Padel at South End Raquet Club

Saturday November 2nd you are invited to try Padel at South End Racquet Club.

The game of Padel has been likened to ‘tennis with walls‘ and ‘squash in the sun’. It is a sport that combines the best elements of tennis, squash and racquetball. It has gained tremendous popularity due to its simplicity and similarities to already existing racquet sports.

The rules allow for the use of the back and sidewalls, resulting in longer rallies. The balls used are similar to tennis balls, the scoring the same as tennis, all the serves are underhand.

Padel is a fun game to play and appeals to a wide population. Children enjoy playing as it is easy to learn, promotes teamwork,  improving their hand-eye coordination. It is a family game. The smaller court size brings everyone closer, making social conversation a much more integral part of the game. Padel is a great game for players of all ages and skills as it is both quick and easy to pick up and is less physically demanding than similar sports like squash. Most players get the grasp of the game within the first 20 minutes of playing and find it easy to achieve a level of proficiency so that they can enjoy it because the game is not as dominated by strength and serve as tennis.

How to choose the best racket?

The weight of a racket:

Most rackets range between 355gr. and 395gr. A light racket would be between 355 gr and 375gr. A heavy racket would range 375gr to 395gr.

Lighter rackets are suitable for beginners and women as they are easier to handle.

Thickness of the racket:

Most rackets range 36mm to 38mm. Advanced players should use thicker rackets to hit the ball harder. For beginners it is recommended thinner rackets because they are easier to use.

Materials of the racket:

Most of the frame of the racket is made of fiberglass or carbon. The face may contain kevlar. Carbon and kevlar are introduced to some higher end rackets to make them extra resistant to shocks and accidents.  The face of a padel racket is usually made of soft materials (foam) or hard materials (eva). A high-density, also known as firm core,  the racket provides more power. A low density, also known as soft core, the racket provides more control. A soft core paddle also provides more comfort and is a better choice for a player with tennis elbow. To choose the right one  remains a personal choice.
